The S1 Method

A six-stage loop, not a linear project. Humans hold the gates; AI does the heavy lifting between them.

In short

What is the S1 Method?

The S1 Method is strategy1's six-stage method (Sense, Model, Simulate, Decide, Deploy, Learn), with a named person signing at three human gates. AI does the research, modelling and red-teaming at each stage, and nothing advances past a gate (H1 at Model, H2 at Decide, H3 at Deploy) without a signed approval record.

Key takeaways

  • The S1 Method has six stages: Sense, Model, Simulate, Decide, Deploy and Learn, and Learn feeds Sense.
  • A named person signs at three human gates: H1 at Model, H2 at Decide and H3 at Deploy.
  • AI researches, models, drafts and red-teams between the gates; it does not decide, and every recommendation needs a human signature.
  • Nothing is written into a client's systems until the client's named owner approves a dry-run at gate H3.

Loop, not line

The plan is checked against what happened.

Most projects end at the presentation. The S1 Method ends at Learn, which feeds Sense. KPIs are tracked against the decision that set them. When results drift, the scenarios re-run and the Council sees a proposed next decision, with the evidence.

FAQ

Questions about the S1 Method

Does AI make the decision in the S1 Method?

No. AI researches, models, drafts and red-teams between the gates, but people decide. At the Decide stage the Strategy Council and, where liability exists, a Domain Fellow sign, and the client chooses. A named person approves every recommendation.

How long does each stage of the S1 Method take?

Indicatively, Sense, Model and Simulate take hours each, Decide takes about a day, Deploy takes days, and Learn is continuous. Actual timing depends on the decision and on how quickly the data arrives.

What happens at the Learn stage of the S1 Method?

AI tracks KPIs against the decision that set them, flags drift and re-runs scenarios, and a monthly Strategy Council reviews the results. The output is an updated Strategy Twin and the next decisions, which feed back into Sense.

How is the S1 Method different from a classic strategic planning process?

A classic planning process usually ends with a presentation. The S1 Method ends at Learn, which feeds Sense, so the plan keeps being checked against results. AI also does the research, modelling and red-teaming between three signed human gates, which turns weeks of strategy work into days.
